And We Have a Winner, Folks!
You guys probably remember that I challenged you to pick my next spinning project a few blog posts ago. Well, I’m happy to report that the knitters have spoken and we have a winner!
This is polwarth in the Igloo colorway from SpunRightRound! It’s very soft and springy. There’s a lot of elasticity to this fiber, which makes it feel very interesting. I started spinning it up last night, and here’s the obligatory bobbin shot:
I have never spun polwarth before, and I’ll admit that there was a bit of a learning curve. Polwarth is a very sticky fiber, and my last few spins have been very not sticky. Even if they were wool, it was usually a silk blend, which makes the fiber more slippery. I had to quickly learn to relax the spinning death grip that had developed while spinning the yak/silk/optim merino. (very slippery, very short fibers.) I’m having a lot of fun with it now! The colors are obviously amazing. I am absolutely obsessed with purple and turquoise together, and I think that the little pops of grey and navy tone it down and keep it from getting too loud. I’m going to Navajo ply it to preserve the order of the gorgeous colors. Even though I’m sure that they would be lovely all mixed together, I find that I just prefer for the yarn to resemble the braid. I played around a little bit, trying to figure out what the fiber wanted to be, and I think it’ll turn out to be a sport/DK weight once it’s plied. I don’t have any specific plans for it, but I know it will eventually turn into something awesome!
P.S. I finished the shawl, but I have to wait for it to dry so I can do a proper photo shoot! (I’ll probably also have to hold off until it gets warmer here. Boston is freezing today!)
